About Mcleod Vacuum Gauges

A McLeod vacuum gauge is a highly accurate, mercury-based scientific instrument used to measure very low pressures . Invented by Herbert McLeod in 1874, it serves as an absolute calibration standard for other electronic gauges because its readings depend strictly on physical volume changes rather than the properties of specific gases.

Construction and Main Parts

Mercury reservoir & piston: Controls the height of the mercury level inside the glass body.

Bulb and measuring capillary: Traps a large, known volume (V) of the unknown low-pressure gas (P).

Reference column and capillary: A parallel capillary tube with a zero reference point used to read the differential height of the mercury.

Cut-off point: The junction where raising mercury seals off the sample gas from the external vacuum source

Working Principle and Operation

Gas trapping: The mercury level is lowered below the cut-off point, allowing the vacuum gas to fill the bulb and measuring capillary.

Compression: Raising the mercury level traps the gas sample and forces it upward into the closed capillary, compressing it into a smaller volume (V) at a higher pressure (P).

Calculation: Pumping mercury until it hits the zero reference mark allows the final pressure difference (h) to define P, letting users calculate P via Boyles Law (P V = P V)
